Celluloid Buttons
Vintage Collectible Celluloid Buttons

Celluloid was used in a variety of ways until it became known that this type of plastic isn't very stable, having problems withstanding heat and moisture, as well as responding to the interaction between metal and celluloid.
Button collectors have learned to take great care in protecting our collectible celluloid buttons by keeping them dry and also making sure they breathe, especially when there are metal embellishments and/or shanks thereon.
Please order by item number and price. Email ME with your order and/or any questions . U.S. Buyer pays $1.50 s/h for up to 3 buttons; a bit more if the package is heavy. Insurance is extra, and recommended.

Buffed Celluloid Buttons

This type of button has recently been described as buffed due to the fact that the design has been painted, then buffed on the high spots to reveal the base color. In other instances, painted designs are found without buffing the color off.
Not all "buffed" buttonsare celluloid. This process has been used on other plastic matierials, including cellulose acetate. The shanked buttons shown below are most likely celluloid, as each has an applied celluloid shank. I haven't tested the sew-through buttons shown but I'm quite sure they ARE celluloid.

Celluloid Wafers

These celluloid wafers, with their geometric designs cut through 2 or more layers, make a handsome card, fun to do for those of us who collect buttons for a hobby. This type of button was most probably used on coats or jackets. Collecting buttons continues to offer us many styles and materials from which to choose.
